My Top 10 Reasons to Breastfeed

I have such a love for Breastfeeding! It is definitely hard work….but totally worth it! 🙂 I am currently at 12 months of Breastfeeding my sweet Hugo! In fact, that “Tree of Life” Photo is my sweet boy that I edited!! Anyways…here are my Top 10 Reasons to Breastfeed!

1 Breastfeeding promotes the process of involution in a mother’s postpartum period. This process decreases a mother’s risk of postpartum hemorrhage and allows a mother’s uterus to return to it’s pre-pregnancy size.
2 Breastmilk is made species specific and made for our human gut/intestines. Therefore, babies who are breastfed tend to be less sick with Gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses.
3 Breastmilk is Free! Formula can become very expensive overtime. On average, formula cost more than $1,500 per year. Not to mention if you ever have to switch formula brands and find “just the right one” because a certain formula doesn’t “agree” with your newborn’s stomach. When supplementing Hugo with formula we used Similac Pro-Sensitive. That is what worked best for us. Please check with your Pediatrician before supplementing or switching formulas. (We started supplementing at nighttime feeds (most nights) when Hugo was almost 7 months. We spent about $200 in formula in his 1st year because of breastfeeding (and some free samples of Similac Pro-Sensitive)! 🙂 I’m always happy to save money!!
4 Breastfeeding promotes mother-infant bonding. When mother and baby are skin-to-skin, the mother is able to smell the newborn which does incredible things to her hormones and continues to produce more and more milk. I love the bond I have with my son!
5 Breastmilk is already prepared. There is no extra time spent preparing a bottle. My favorite bottles for both breastfeeding and bottle feeding (which is how daddy feeds baby while I am at work) are Dr. Brown’s Bottles!
6 Breastfed babies receive all of their needed nutrients in their mother’s breastmilk. Our bodies make milk that is specific to our species and know exactly what nutrients the baby needs.
7 Breastfed babies are at less risk of having ear infections. It has been shown that exclusively breastfeed babies are associated with a reduced risk of ear infections.
8 Women who do NOT breastfeed at are a greater risk or having breast cancer. According to research women who breastfeed for a longer amount of time are more protected against breast cancer. (Collaborative Group on Hormonal Factors in Breast Cancer, 2002)
9 Babies who were breastfed longer have higher IQs. (International Pediatric Research Foundation, 2010)
10 Breast is the best for baby and mama! Breastfeeding is one of the best things you can do for your newborn’s health and your own!

In no way at all am I trying to put down other mother’s for exclusively feeding their baby formula! At the end of the day… feeding your baby is what is most important!! I’m just simply saying my opinion on why Breastfeeding was the choice for us! 🙂
