Traveling while Pregnant

Mini Vacation to Mt. Charleston at 22 weeks pregnant

Traveling during pregnancy can sometimes be tricky. Here are just a few tips that may help you. But please be sure to ask your physician or nurse midwife any specific questions you may have. Because everyone’s pregnancy is different and you may have high risk needs that won’t allow you to travel at all during pregnancy!!!

  • Most physicians will say it is safe to walk through a metal detector and body scanner (at the airport) during pregnancy. However, if you don’t feel comfortable you can ask your doctor for a note and they can provide you with one to give TSA at the airport.
  • Always wear you seat belt.
  • Get up to move once an hour (to decrease the chances of blood clots).
  • Stay well hydrated and drink plenty of water/fluids.
    • If on an airplane request an aisle seat so that you have easier access to the bathroom.
  • It’s not recommended that you travel once you are in your 3rd trimester and sometimes even towards the end of your 2nd.
    • You are far away from your physician (who knows all about your health history and plan of care).
    • Also, if you would happen to go into labor early when you are away from home you could be admitted into the hospital and stuck there until the baby delivers. Then, baby may be stuck there in the NICU afterwards. It is best to stay close to home towards the end of your pregnancy.

I hope some of these travel tips help you all! And please feel free to leave any other tips you may have below!
